Remington 1858 New Model Army .the 44 was produced between 1863 and 1875 and it is estimated that some 122,000 units of this model left the factory. It had the world's first so-called "closed skeleton" (a one-piece skeleton surrounded the drum with cartridges), which made it more reliable than Colt's contemporaries, which had an open skeleton. The closed framework also provided greater structural rigidity.. Another advantage was the ability to remove the entire drum and put on a new one, already loaded.

The Remington Model 1858 was William F's favorite weapon. cody's "Buffalo Bill". A copy of this weapon, which belonged to Will, can be seen at the Remington Arms Company headquarters along with a handwritten note by him that reads: "I carried and used this old Remington revolver for many years, in wars with Indians and for killing buffalo. And it has never let me down." It is worth noting that Bufallo Bill was so attached to his gun that he used it even after the advent of more modern revolvers with a compound cartridge. The source of this attachment can be traced to the high accuracy and knock-down power of this revolver. The projectiles fired from the Remington 1858 were capable, depending on the quantity and quality of the gunpowder used, of achieving significant exit velocities, from 168 to 393 meters per second or more. In comparison, the initial velocity of a bullet fired from a P-64 pistol, is 305 meters per second.

For 50 years Pietta Fierarms has been producing replicas of 19th century revolvers. Thanks to the work of skilled Italian craftsmen, it is possible to own weapons that have appeared in such Hollywood productions as: The Way of the Giants, The Amazing Horseman, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Gone with the Wind. The workmanship of the weapon can not be faulted at all, the parts are perfectly fitted together, nothing sticks, there are no unnecessary gaps and crevices on the weapon. On the Internet you can find information that replicas made by Pietta Firearms, have an enlarged handle compared to the original Remington. This is due to the adaptation of the weapon to the size of the hands of modern users.
